The Department of Justice ensures the impartial administration of justice and the protection of the public interest through the dual offices of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and aboriginal values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

One part of the Attorney General's role is that of a Cabinet Minister. In this capacity the Minister is responsible for representing the interests and perspectives of the Ministry at Cabinet, while simultaneously representing the interests and perspectives of Cabinet and consequently the Government to the Ministry and the Ministry's communities of interest.
